There are many patriotic quotes written by people from many different walks of life and said by individuals with some measure of patriotism. However, the following patriotic quotes are some of the most treasured.

The following Mark Twain quote is long but meaningful. He said, “Each of you, for himself, by himself and on his own responsibility, must speak. And it is a solemn and weighty responsibility and not likely to be flung aside at the bullying of the pulpit, press, government, or the empty catchphrases of politicians. Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong and which course is patriotic and which isn’t. You can not shirk this and be a man. To decide against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor both to yourself and to your country, let man label you as they may. If you alone of all the nation shall decide one way, and that way be the right way according to your convictions of the right, you have done your duty by yourself and by your country—hold up your head! You have nothing to be ashamed of!”

Mark Twain was a pen name of a much more dedicated man who was every bit as patriotic as the pen that wrote about the subject.

American Journalist Ambrose Bierce once said, “DIPLOMACY, the patriotic art of lying for one’s country”. This could be, in fact, true.

Henry David Thoreau, American Poet and Philosopher once said, “Yet some can be patriotic who have no self-respect, and sacrifice the greater to the less. They love the soil which makes their graves, but have no sympathy with the spirit which may still animate their clay. Patriotism is a maggot in their heads”. You probably disagree and most would, but everyone, even Thoreau, has an opinion on the subject of patriotism.

American Actor Alec Baldwin once said, “I’m very patriotic. I’m an arch-patriot. When they play the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ I get all choked up. I love my country”.

Kim Campbell said, “We Canadians are not given as a people to great patriotic displays”. Many would stop and wonder why this is supposedly true of Canadians and since Campbell seemed to speak for Canadians in general, it must be true.

Patriotism comes in all forms. Many people display the art of patriotism in different ways. However, one thing is for certain, when in a global crisis, one’s patriotism for Planet Earth comes shining through and that is perhaps a sign that patriotism does in fact, exist in all of us.
