Athletes are inspired by their own skills, their own dreams and the goals they set for themselves. Everyone else can be inspired by the quotes intended to motivate those athletes who need no such thing.

Heywood Broun said, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it”.

Erma Bombeck said, “ If a man watches three football games in a row, he should be declared legally dead”.

Vince Lombardi, one of the greatest football coaches to ever live said, “ Football isn’t a contact sport; it’s a collision sport. Dancing is a contact sport.”

Frank Gifford, famous football player and husband to notorious Kathy Lee once said, “Pro football is like nuclear warfare. There are no winners, only survivors”. He should know, his very public affairs made his famous marriage survive something similar to nuclear warfare considering he cheated on America’s favorite sweetheart.

For the athletes who eventually have a coach they do not like, Ken Loeffler had this to say, “There are two kinds of coaches—those who have been fired and those who will be fired”.

Bill Parcells once said this of his players, “ You can only really yell at the players you trust”. So when Bill yells, you’ll know he really trusts the players who are on the receiving end of his fury.

Herschell Walker once said this, “ If you train hard, you’ll not only be hard, you’ll be hard to beat”.

Herb Elliot said this famous quote, “ The more I talk to athletes, the more convinced I become that the method of training is relatively unimportant. There are many ways to the top, and the training method you choose is just the one that suits you best. No, the important thing is the attitude of the athlete, the desire to get to the top”.

An old Japanese proverb states, “ Fall seven times, stand up eight”.

Tommy Lasorda, a great athlete in his own right once said, “ the difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination”.

John Wooden once said, “ Nothing will work unless you do” and this proves to be a true statement in all aspects of athletics.

Athletes are the people who inspire us most. Most of the great ones not only inspire us but entertain us by their greatness on and off of the fields and courts where they play. Their athletic greatness is always something to see and when their greatness follows them off the courts or off the fields where they play, then they are worthy of being an inspiration to all.
