America has never been as divided as it was in the years surrounding the civil war.

They were terrible times for so many: the slaves who suffered under the oppression of racism, the whites who took on the cause of abolition and paid dearly. There were the politicians who struggled every day to keep the country united, to no avail. Then there were the soldiers who fought for their army’s ideals.

Witness here the famous civil war quotes, that came from that era, and those strained, painful times.

These are the now famous words of abraham lincoln, said after he walked the battlefield in gettysburg pennsylvania.

"We here highly resolve that these dead shall have not died in vain; that this nation under god shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth"
Abraham Lincoln

These words come from robert e. Lee, a southerner who believed as passionately in his cause as any man on the battlefield.

"It is well that war is so terrible. Or we should grow fond of it"
Robert E. Lee Then there were the profound words of those whom the war was being fought. Frederick douglass along with a handful of courageous, articulate writers, harriet beecher stowe among them, sought to help inspire backs to understand what they must do to overcome the oppression they experienced. His words were battle cries to all slaves, they served to anger them, to inspire them, and to give them hope.

"What to the american slave is your fourth of july? I Answer a day that reveals to him, more than any other day of the year, the gross injustices to which he is constant victim."
Frederick Douglass

He also said these words, which hold as true today as they did in 1862 when spoken.

"The destiny of america is the destiny of the nation"
Frederick Douglass
