It is impossible to separate out the history of black america with the men and women who are part of that history. There are those who fought for freedom for the black people and then fought for equal rights and opportunity that remain synonymous with the black movement.

There were those who fought with their pens and those who fought with their hands. Both helped to bring about changes that were crucial to the health of the black culture and the nation as a whole. They have become pillars of their time, people whose work will never be forgotten.

First and foremost there are the words of martin luther king. His speeches were the cornerstone of the civil rights movement and these speeches will be remembered always.

"If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live"
Martin Luther King

These were the words that Martin Luther King spoke when he accepted the nobel peace prize in 1964:

"I Have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Martin Luther King

The demand for equality did not begin with Martin Luther King of course.

Hundreds and thousands of men and women came before him. These words, from one of the first men to speak out against racism, Frederick Douglass, ring so loud because they are so true and remain that way today.

"If there is not struggle there is not progress. Those who profess to favor freedom are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightening, they want ocean without the awful roar of the many waters."
Frederick Douglass
